Homework requirements for Year Two
Home Reading
At the start of Week 3, students will receive a home reading book. This book will be accompanied by two comprehension sheets:
- The first is a list of general comprehension questions and activities that your child can undertake with any selected text. This sheet is yours to keep. It does not need to be returned to school.
- The second is a laminated sheet with questions and activities specific to the reading book your child has received.
Your child should exchange their book (and the accompanying laminated comprehension) each Friday. This will take place in our shared learning area in the Year Two block. Parent volunteers will be needed. Please see me if you can assist.
Any home reading activities should be noted in your child's Read It Diary (this is the yellow book that you purchase as part of your child's booklist). In addition, each student will receive a RED book - this is a notebook that they can use to record their comprehension answers or any other notes, drawings, thoughts or opinions they may have about their reading book. It is not necessary to complete written answers to comprehension questions. I am happy that, sometimes, this may be a verbal discussion between you and your child rather than a written activity. Home reading should not be laborious but we do want to make sure that your child is considering and reflecting on what they have read.
As discussed at the parent meeting, this is a change to the home reading program and I'm sure there will be some teething issues as we bed down the new process. Your patience would be appreciated and if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions please come and have a chat to me.
The home reading books can of course be supplemented with any reading material you have at home. We want to encourage a life long love of reading and if this means your child reads a magazine, a web site, a newspaper or an e-book, then roll with it!
Spelling
Students will receive their spelling list each Monday. They will need to write out their spelling words each night in preparation for Friday’s test.
It is good practice to ensure your child understands the meaning of each word. Put them into sentences or have your child look up the tricky ones in a dictionary.
Mathematics
Your child will receive their logon in Week 2. The aim is to complete 2-3 Mathletics activities each week.
Other Homework
Occasionally your child may be set another homework task. This generally will be a science task or a speaking and listening item. You will receive notification of this via your child's Communication Diary.
If you have any questions about homework or how best to help your child, please send me an email or pop into the classroom.
